Thank you for contacting me about public sector pay. I believe a pay rise for all public sector workers, both in Halton and across the country, is fair and affordable.

The large number of letters and emails I have received on this issue highlights the strength of public concern. Indeed, an online petition launched by UNISON calling on the Government to end the pay cap has been signed by more than 145,000 people. Parliament will debate this petition on 4 December 2017.

Thank you for contacting me recently about the legal status of animals and the European Union (Withdrawal) Bill, also known as 'the Repeal Bill'.

I believe we have a moral duty to treat the animals we share our planet with in a humane and compassionate way, and I agree that leaving the EU must not lead to any watering down of existing standards on animal welfare.

As you know, Article 13 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union protects the legal status of animals as sentient beings. Despite indicating that the Repeal Bill would incorporate Article 13, the Bill as currently drafted, will not ensure its preservation in UK law. I share your concern about this.

I share the concerns of the many people who have written to me about this issue. I agree that a comprehensive health service should continue to be provided free at the point of use and that encroaching privatisation of the NHS must be halted. I also believe that there needs to be more investment to provide the NHS and social care with the funding it so desperately needs.

Thank you for taking the time to contact me regarding the New Clause Two amendment to the Finance Bill.  Labour MPs, including myself voted to close the loophole but it was not carried as the government voted against it.  You can find the debate here Finance Bill 31st October 2017.
