Both the Mersey Gateway and the Silver Jubilee Bridge are in my constituency of Halton and there is a long history that has led to current tolling situation.  I have been involved in the crossings situation for over two decades, making many representations to governments to support the fact that Halton needed a new Mersey crossing.

During my time as MP for Halton I have always had a good relationship with our local Police. They have a difficult and demanding job which increasingly they have had to do with diminishing resources. They do a great job on our behalf but they are being severely stretched.

I’m from Halton and live here, I know how strong our community is but we also face a number of challenges in terms of crime. I regularly have local people tell me that they want to see more police officers on our streets.

I want to start by putting on record my thanks and appreciation to our NHS staff who do a wonderful job.

When I became an MP in 1997 people were waiting 18 months and longer to have an operation with long waits to see a cancer specialist. When Labour left office in 2010 we had record low waiting times, with an average waiting time of 18 weeks and a waiting time of two weeks to see a cancer specialist.

The Tory/Lib Dem coalition government decision to accelerate the rise in the women’s state pension age has had a devastating impact on many women who were born in the 1950s.

I support the equalisation of the state pension age, however, I believe it is vital that changes to the state pension age are carefully implemented so that those who are affected are given adequate notice of changes and have enough time to plan for the future.

One Halton headteacher told me recently "School budgets are being pushed beyond breaking point". This is the real legacy of a Tory government. Many schools here in Halton are struggling with their budgets, facing cuts and having to reduce their staff. Our teachers do a great job, working hard to give our children a good education but the pressure on them is growing with more teachers leaving the profession. The Tories proposed new schools funding formula would see cuts to the budgets of all but one of our secondary schools in Halton.
